실재하지 않는 풍경이 있다. 웅크려 앉아있는 인물의 발아래엔 먹과 물이 엉키고 뭉개지는 찰나의 순간이 남긴 흔적들이 가득하다. 수묵화 특유의 여운이 담긴 물 얼룩의 흐름을 따라 시선을 옮기다 보면 어딘가 불안정해 보이는 오리배가 떠 있는 이곳이 호수임을 알 수 있다. 천장으로부터 늘어뜨려진 광목천은 번져나가는 먹의 자유로운 움직임과 함께 섬세한 일렁임으로 장면에 생명력을 부여한다. 작품에 둘러싸인 전시장은 그렇게 작가의 생각과 감정이 자유롭게 펼쳐지는 장(場)으로 탈바꿈한다.
한상아는 자신이 경험한 일과 그로 인해 비롯된 감정이 공상과 뒤얽혀 나타나는 내면의 풍경을 그린다. 누구나 살면서 한 번쯤 겪을 법한 평범한 사건을 바탕으로 하고 있다는 점에서, 작가의 고백은 개인의 서사를 뛰어넘어 보편적인 이야기로 확장된다. 위켄드에서 선보이는 신작 <낯선 사이>도 이러한 작업의 연장선으로, 여성작가로서 봉착한 상황에 대한 낯섦과 두려움, 그럼에도 불구하고 그 속에 존재하는 희망의 여운을 조용하지만 힘 있게 풀어냈다. 다만 그동안 주로 이시동도(異時同圖)의 형태로 서로 다른 시공간의 인물과 풍경, 그리고 사건들을 한데 뒤섞어 파노라마로 펼쳐 보였었다면, 이번엔 사건보다 개인의 감정에 더 초점을 맞추어 차곡차곡 쌓인 감정들을 의인화해 나타냈다. 작가는 먹의 종류나 섞는 물의 양에 따라 만들어내는 농담의 차이를 통해 다채로운 먹의 검정 빛깔을 드러내고, 섬세한 계산을 통해 천에 스며드는 먹의 번짐을 어느 정도 조절한다. 그렇게 의지가 담긴 붓질이 옮겨낸 머릿속 풍경은 곧 작가의 용기와 희망에 대한 기록이 된다.
한상아(b.1987)는 홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화과와 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 주로 개인적인 경험에서 비롯된 사건과 감정이 뒤섞인 공상화를 먹으로 광목천에 옮기는 작업을 해왔다. 현재 서울을 기반으로 작업하고 있으며, 성남아트센터 큐브미술관 (2013), 갤러리도스 (2014)에서 두 번의 개인전을 가졌다. 2017 년에는 경기문화재단의 유망작가, 2015 년 단원미술제 작가로 선정되었고, 고양아람누리 아람미술관 (2017), 설화수 플래그십 스토어 (2017), 경기도 미술관(2016) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다.

Sang A Han paints the inner scenery, which her experiences and emotions from those events are intertwined with fantasy. As they are based on ordinary events that anyone can experience in daily life, her art becomes a universal story that transcends personal narratives. Presented for the first time at Weekend, Han’s new work “Unfamiliar Space,” which is a continuation of her previous works, unfolds the unfamiliarity and natural fear she encounters as a female artist and silver lining that lingers underneath, with quietude, but also with definite strength. While many of her past works focused on depicting people and landscapes from events of different times and spaces in panoramic paintings, Unfamiliar Space focuses more on the artist’s emotions by personifying her retained sentiments. Han creates different light and shade using different types of inks or amounts of water to express variations of black colors of ‘Meok(india ink).’ She also adjusts the degree of spreading ink on the fabric through delicate calculations. By embodying the artist’s strong will, the brush strokes intricately intertwine each to deliver her inner landscape, making this work a record of courage and hope.
Sang A Han(b.1987) graduated from Department of Oriental Painting of Hongik University, and received a MFA degree from the same graduate school. Han paints her inner scenery, which her experiences and emotions from those events are intertwined with fantasy, with india ink on fabric.Currently based in Seoul, Han has held two solo exhibitions at Seongnam Arts Center Cube Art Museum (2013) and Gallery DOS (2014). She was selected as a promising artist by Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation in 2017 as well as in Danwon Art Festival in 2015. She participated in many group exhibitions including but not limited to Aram Art Museum at Goyang Aram Nuri Arts Center (2017), AMORE Sulwhasoo Flagship Store & Dosan Park (2017) and Gyeonggi Museum of Art (2016).
