오희원 개인전 : Iridescent Fog

"빛을 받아들인 표면은 빛나는 표면을 다각도로 드러낸다. 표면을 향하던 파동이 표면과 충돌해 표면의 반대 방향을 향한다. 평면으로 안착해 있던 표면은 빛 아래 조각처럼 입체화되어 떠오르기 시작한다. 선으로 형성된 거대한 얼룩은 수성 액체에 섞여 들지 못하고 무늬를 형성하며 미끄러지듯 번져 가는 유성 액체의 자취일 수도 있고, 불규칙적으로 일렁이는 불꽃일 수도 있고, 반짝이는 물고기 비늘의 환영일 수도 있고, 공중의 물방울이 햇빛을 받아 태양의 반대편에서 나타나는 무지개일 수도 있다. 서로 경계가 맞닿아 있는 형상들은 분명한 듯 불분명하게 모여 있다. 점으로 이뤄진 미세한 얼룩은 떨어져 내린 비나 눈의 방울일 수도 있고, 수증기가 얼어붙은 성에일 수도, 알 수 없는 상태의 대기가 유리창에 남긴 정체 모를 자국의 켜일 수도, 쌓여 가는 먼지일 수도, 가라앉은 앙금의 잔해일 수도, 하등 균류일 수도, 발자국일 수도, 죽은 조약돌일 수도 있다. 그것들은 사방에 흩어진 채 있다. 몸을 기울여 본다. 선과 점의 집합을 이룬 겹겹의 색들이 각기 다른 농도로 빛나기 시작한다. 이미 알고 있다고 여겼던 색들이 아직 알지 못하는 색들이 되어 간다. 색의 표면. 색의 이면. 빛을 반사하는 거울로서. 빛을 굴절시키고 분산시키는 프리즘으로서."

"Receiving light, the surface reveals its many angles. Waves headed for the surface collide against it and reverse direction. The surface, which had settled into flatness, starts to rear up and take on depth and height, as a sculpture does when hit with light. The giant linear smudges could well be residue left behind by an oily fluid that has failed to mix with a watery fluid and has glided over it instead to form different patterns. Or it could be an irregularly flickering flame, or a vision of gleaming fish scales, or an iridescent rainbow arcing across the sky opposite the sun, formed as light glints off water particles in the air. Whatever the case these shapes clearly and ambiguously crowd together, their boundaries touching. The minute dotted smudges could be drops of rain or snow, or perhaps frost, or some unidentifiable remnant left behind on glass panes by an unknowable atmosphere, or it could be settling dust, residual dregs, lower fungi, footsteps, dead pebbles. These are scattered in all directions. Lean forward, get closer to the canvas. Each of the layered strips of color that forms the clusters of lines and dots begin to take on a different glimmering depth. Colors we presumed to know morph into colors we do not know. The obverse of color. The reverse of color. As light-reflecting mirror. As light-refracting, light-scattering prism."
