이현창 개인전 : 흔들리지 않는 나라 Hyonchang Lee : Unshakable Kingdom

세대를 거듭해 이어지는 애국의 부름은 인민들에게 어떤 얼굴로 나타나는가. 성역을 부정하는 자들에게 붙여진 이름은 '비국민'이었고, '빨갱이'였으며, 이제 새로운 호명이 가해지는 것을 목격하고 있다. 개인과 국가의 관계에 관심을 기울여 온 이현창은 한국 사회에서 구축된 허상의 전선과 '애국-이적'이라는 기이한 대립항의 세계를 관찰하고 기록했다. 전시의 제목 '흔들리지 않는 나라'는 신약성경 히브리서의 "우리는 흔들리지 않는 나라를 받으려 하고 있으니 감사를 드립시다"라는 구절에서 가져온 것으로, 애국심을 강조하는 연설에서 자주 언급되는 '아무도 흔들 수 없는 나라'에 대한 냉소적인 풍자로 작동한다.

이현창은 주류의 서사에서 배제된 것들에 주목하며 사회적·역사적 맥락에서 동시대의 미묘한 표면들을 관찰하고 기록한다. 개인전 《살과 뼈》(공간 힘, 2018)를 열었고, 다수의 그룹전과 프로젝트에 참여했다.

The call of patriotism continues from generation to generation. The names given to those who have objected to the order were “unpatriotic individuals,” “Reds,” and now a new name is being given. Hyonchang Lee, who has been interested in the relationship between the individual and the state, has observed and documented the imaginary battlefield built in South Korean society on the basis of a strange dichotomy between patriotism and treason. The title of the exhibition, Unshakable Kingdom, comes from the verse of The Letter to the Hebrews, “Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom should have gratitude.” It works as a cynical satire of “a nation that cannot be shaken” often mentioned in speeches emphasizing patriotism.

Hyonchang Lee's work focuses on what have been excluded from the dominant narrative and attempts to observe and document the subtle surfaces of the contemporary world in social and historical contexts. He held a solo exhibition titled Flesh and Bones (Space Heem, 2018) and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and projects.
