TELL
-Rring rring, hello, is this the Ffuture? This is the present calling. Where did you go?
How strange, when did the past become a pastiche? Everyone has a different year, but I would like to say mine is 1997, or was it 2013. The past isn’t moulding in a cupboard.
It fizzes and pops with electric neuroticism.
It’s coming to a screen near you in 4k.
Is it some sort of compulsive trap?
Let’s look in the museum then. To have a nation, a museum needs to curate its history and design its identity. Where is the way in?
Caught pounding our noses on large glass panes, perhaps we never left.
How can you leave what isn’t there? Handful of memories of what has never been.
An experience of something new and unique is always already gone.
A sick déjà vu.
Ah, hello again. You. You. You. Let’s look at something new.
Are you watching me? How comforting it is for you to render me insolvent.
A fool.
Coherent temporalities dissolve through fibre optics, spitting out sputtering speculations.
Not all memories are sad.
You are a boundless net of love that easily trapped me.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 신작 <You are a boundless net of love that easily trapped me.>는 아직 건 설 중인 실제 장소를 기반으로 하며, 미술관이 완성된 후의 미래를 배경으로 서사가 진행된다.
You are a boundless net of love that easily trapped me.
The work takes place in a museum in the future that in reality is currently being completed. From the perspective of museums as sites for ordering time and defining national identities, the work is my attempt to wonder on whether such institutions hold some potential for new cultural forms. How is the museum space effected by time and what does it say about the current state of art. It is a work of fiction, inspired by historical events, personal memories, technology. One character, is overcome with feelings of nostalgia, whilst the other acts as a dichotomy between technology as potential for future social relations, and the ironic fact that such technologies can also be used as an apparatus for state surveillance.
In 1997,Hong Kong, a former British colony, was returned to China. For some, that day represented time becoming disjointed. On that day as the PLA marched from Shenzhen to HK in the early hours of the morning, they were greeted by some, like ushering in a new future. As the army occupied the Prince of Wales Building, the paradox of time and culture being smashed together could be seen as the name wasn’t removed until a later date.
The assumption of decolonization is that it is a process whereby peoples are able to return a motherland. However, the 20th century shows that this process was fraught by further antagonisms. In one sense, Hong Kong could be suggested to not have been decolonized, but instead becoming re-colonized by a state that they further feel being alienated from.
What is left is the present being in stasis, as the future has been marked with a deadline for 2047.
Taking inspiration from the works of Mark Fisher, specifically the two books‘Capitalist Realism: Is there no alternative?’ and ‘Ghost of my life: Writings on depression, Hauntology and Lost Futures’, the video for the exhibition is my attempt to understand the pervasive feelings of nostalgia, melancholy and lost futures that seem to inundate the overall atmosphere of post-modernity and neo-liberalism. I consider this a form of psychological trauma.
In recent years, peoples of different countries have expressed the longing for returning to a past. Make America Great Again, Brexit, the desire to return to British Colonialism as evidenced by the flag popping up at protests, etc. Does the past lock some form of utopian potential? Or is a past that does not get locked up in a museum, bound to hinder a future from arriving? (Subtitle&Script translation-Jinjoo Kim Gardiner)
