RYO MATSUOKA : PLAY PRAY PAINT

When did I start to draw and paint? When asked, I simply say, “Since I was very young.” When did I start to play? When asked, I simply say, “Since I was very young.” I played with drawing and painting. I would draw lines and place colors. What was going on in my mind? If I found building blocks, I would play with the blocks. But I’ve been keeping my journal by drawing: drawing when meeting people, and drawing as part of life. Just a walk often gives me the inspiration to draw. Drawing on this prompts me to seek faraway places. Traveling injects me with new awareness. On the road, I don’t try to make my journal pretty. I simply draw as I see; it’s my daily journal, and my way of writing words and codes. Which reinforces the fact that drawing is part of my everyday life I don’t try to transcend anything in my art I don’t try to force any view No need to stand out or shout a slogan I draw, standing here and now. Simply keep drawing. And I feel a sound surrounding me, a never-changing, eternal echo. The sound demands no attention from me, and that is why a realization comes to me. I feel the presence of a human being. I feel the art of living. Not techniques. There is no stopping until I stop

I draw, I paint

I work with other art forms, such as embroidery and collage of the cloth. I have been drawing and painting since before I can remember. The act of drawing opened me up for life and unknown places, connected me with new people, and gave me different windows of time and place, further inspiring me to draw. In this ever-extending network of life, people, time, and place, I keep myself busy in and out of Japan by creating paintings, installations, murals, and embroideries, presenting my visions in solo shows or Live Paint events.
