성낙희 Nak Hee Sung : Cuddle

Gallery EM is pleased to present Cuddle, a solo exhibition of new work by Nakhee Sung (b. 1971, Seoul) from August 25th to October 1st. This is Sung’s second solo show at Gallery EM. Sung is known for her emotionally charged and impromptu painting technique: a process of layering such basic painterly elements as lines, points, and planes. Sung’s recent series of work, entitled Polyphonic, is a continuation of her abstract style of expression, with its roots in the automatism of Surrealism.

As implied in her exhibition title, Cuddle, Sung has recently been producing works that deal with humanist emotions. The artist states that she chose the word ‘cuddle’ as the title of the exhibition to express her intention to warmly encompass and/or welcome each and every emotion and shape presented in her work, including newly introduced figurative elements. In her new paintings, Sung ‘cuddles’ not only abstract but figurative forms, such as human faces that include eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Hidden in her paintings, these figurative forms are intended to reconcile conflicting ideas and create a subtle tension between abstract images.

Sung’s work, which amasses oil-painted layers, shows both the imaginary scenery of her inner self and a stream of personal consciousness, and these fused images produce dazzling visual effects on the canvas. Although her work displays chaotic images of expressively charged energy, the layered paints that shape forms ultimately present a structured combination. With these combined images, Sung is searching for the natural. In this context, the artist prefers to use curved lines rather than the straight lines prevalent in her earlier work. She dwells primarily on the value of that which is beyond the superficial, and her work seems to be inspired by nature, with an organic and systematic order that expresses her psychological landscapes. Nonetheless, Sung’s works are not simply landscape paintings of an individual. Viewers encounter seductive canvases that are filled with a positive and harmonious dynamism.
